About Montessori

Maria Montessori, MD, was a pioneer and broke many barriers in society. In the late 1800’s, Maria became one of Italy’s first female physicians. In the early 1900’s, she became intrigued by education and immersed herself in educational theory. In 1907, she opened her first “Casa dei Bambini” or classroom in San Lorenzo, Italy. With scientific observation and prior experience, Dr. Montessori created an environment that fostered the child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.

Montessori designed materials provide a hands-on approach to learning. The child has the ability to self-select work, which allows them to learn at their own pace. Lastly, the multi-aged classroom opens the door to develop mentor and leadership skills.

Current research supports that children who learn in a Montessori environment exhibit a strong foundation in social-emotional skills.
